Well, that’s a long story. I hope to bring it to you in a way you’ll enjoy. The impetus for this blog began in 2018, when my wife Diane left this world after a prolonged struggle with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. I cared for her at home full-time for the last six years of her life. After the end, my daughter Lauren and I planned a journey from New Jersey to California, to scatter Diane’s ashes where I first met her in 1967, on the Mount Whitney Trail in the Sierra Nevada wilderness.
As I began planning the trip itself, Lauren set up a group on Facebook to let our friends know what we were doing throughout the trip. She called it “It’s All About the Journey,” and I borrowed that title for this blog. If anyone has a better idea, I’m open to suggestions.
I grew up in Southern California in the 1950s and 1960s, attending the University of California at Berkeley during an interesting time in its history. The photos of the Free Speech Movement I made as a photographer for The Daily Californian have endured to inform people of the events and experiences of that time. Disillusioned with Clark Kerr’s Multiversity, I transferred to UCLA and earned a degree in film production at what is now the School of Theater, Film, and Television.
After graduating from UCLA I veered away from film into computing, working as a computer programmer and related jobs for the balance of my career. I started back into the wilderness activities I enjoyed growing up: fishing, hiking, and backpacking. On a weekend drive through Yosemite, I got the idea of climbing Mount Whitney, because I had been up the trail before but never made it to the top. The challenge appealed to me. That was how I happened to be camping at Mirror Lake, four miles up the trail, when I met a young woman whose looks and personality bowled me over.
